Vascular Associates Perform Vein Blood Clot Clearance Procedure

Baton Rouge, LA - Vascular Associates surgeons recently became the first in the region to remove a venous blood clot (DVT) causing swelling and pain in the leg of a 37-year-old man using a recently approved drug infusion catheter designed for the treatment of DVT (TRELLIS-8) that enables targeted delivery of clot-dissolving drugs.

Approximately 400,000 - 600,000 new DVT cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. The majority of patients diagnosed with DVT are treated with anticoagulation therapy alone. While this therapy reduces the risk of fatal pulmonary embolism and further blood clot formation, the underlying blood clot may remain and cause permanent vein damage and postthrombotic syndrome.

“Early removal of venous blood clots along with anticoagulation improves patient outcomes including the reduction of postthrombotic syndrome – a condition that can cause skin changes, swelling, pain and disability in a significant number of people whose clot remains in the leg long term”, says Dr. Andrew J. Olinde of Vascular Associates.

“We are happy to provide this new therapy to the people of the region.”

Drs. Olinde and Sam appeared recently on WBRZ TV News talking about treatment of Varicose Veins.

Albert D. Sam II, MD presented Total Vein Care’s results of radiofrequency ablation for varicose vein treatment at the New Cardiovascular Horizons meeting in New Orleans, October 16, 2004. The topic was “Endovenous Options for Varicose Veins” which is one treatment modality that has basically replaced the traditional surgical treatment - stripping of the varicose veins.

The VNUS Closure procedure uses radiofrequency to ablate or close off the large main superficial vein in the inner part of the thigh. He shared with the audience, predominately physicians, Total Vein Care’s experience performing the VNUS Closure procedure. In 68 consecutive cases there was a 97% short-term clinical success rate, with a low complication rate of 1.5%. Performed on an outpatient basis, patient satisfaction was very high.
