Noninvasive (painless, no needles or dyes) venous testing
consists of using duplex color ultrasound to image as
well as assess flow within the veins of the leg, paying
particular attention to how well the valves in the veins
close. If the valves do not close completely they are
considered to be incompetent. This finding is of importance
to the physician when planning treatment.
The test requires no preparation and takes approximately
30-60 minutes. Most insurance companies typically cover
this expense.
Intra-operative and Post-operative Use
Venous duplex ultrasound is used during some venous
surgical procedures to guide the surgeon as to placement
within the vein, e.g. VNUS Closure (radiofrequency ablation
of the saphenous vein) procedure or the ELT (Endovenous
Laser Treatment) procedure. It is routine practice to
use venous duplex ultrasound after these procedures
to ensure the effectiveness of the procedure. |
